Normocytic Normochromic Anemia

Meaning

Normocytic normochromic anemia is a classification of anemia where the total circulating red blood cell mass is reduced, yet the individual red blood cells maintain a normal size and normal concentration of hemoglobin. The mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) are within the established reference ranges, distinguishing it from microcytic or macrocytic anemias. This presentation is commonly associated with systemic conditions like chronic disease, renal failure, or certain endocrine deficiencies.
