Normal Weight Obesity

Meaning

Normal Weight Obesity (NWO) describes individuals who maintain a Body Mass Index (BMI) within the normal range, typically 18.5 to 24.9 kg/m², yet possess an elevated body fat percentage coupled with a comparatively low amount of lean muscle mass. This condition represents a discordance between apparent healthy weight and actual body composition, often termed ‘skinny fat’ in common parlance, indicating a predisposition to metabolic dysregulation.
