Norepinephrine Spike

Meaning

A Norepinephrine Spike is a rapid, acute surge in the concentration of the catecholamine neurotransmitter and hormone norepinephrine (also known as noradrenaline) within the synaptic clefts of the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as in the systemic circulation. This spike is a key component of the sympathetic nervous system’s “fight-or-flight” response, resulting in immediate physiological effects such as increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure, and heightened vigilance. While useful for acute survival, frequent or excessive spikes can lead to chronic allostatic load.
