Non-Visual Photoreceptors

Meaning

Non-Visual Photoreceptors are specialized light-sensitive cells in the retina, specifically the intrinsically photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells (ipRGCs), that do not contribute to image formation but are solely dedicated to relaying environmental light information to the brain’s master clock. These receptors contain the photopigment melanopsin and are the critical biological link between the external light-dark cycle and the internal hormonal rhythms.
