Non-REM Sleep Quality

Meaning

Non-REM Sleep Quality refers to the efficiency and structural integrity of the three stages of non-rapid eye movement sleep, which collectively constitute the majority of the sleep cycle. High quality Non-REM sleep, particularly the slow-wave sleep (SWS) or deep sleep stage, is physiologically critical for restorative processes, including tissue repair, memory consolidation, and the clearance of metabolic waste products from the brain. It is characterized by synchronized brainwave activity and a significant reduction in muscle tone and heart rate. Deficits in this phase compromise both physical and cognitive recovery.
