Mechanism
The electrical stimulation travels afferently along the vagus nerve fibers to the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) in the brainstem, which then projects to areas involved in mood, stress, and inflammation. By increasing vagal tone, VNS enhances the body’s capacity for relaxation and recovery, directly influencing the HPA axis by reducing the chronic secretion of stress hormones.
