Non-Genomic Action

Meaning

Non-Genomic Action refers to the rapid, acute cellular effects of steroid hormones and other lipophilic messengers that occur independently of the classic process of gene transcription and protein synthesis. Unlike the slower genomic pathway, which requires hours or days, these actions are initiated within seconds to minutes and involve direct interaction with cell membrane receptors or rapid activation of existing intracellular signaling cascades. This mechanism is crucial for the immediate effects of hormones, such as the swift modulation of neurotransmitter release or the rapid change in ion channel activity.
