Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Meaning

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, or NAFLD, is a clinical condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fat, or steatosis, in the liver cells of individuals who consume little to no alcohol. This common metabolic disorder ranges in severity from simple steatosis to Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves inflammation and potential progression to cirrhosis and liver failure. NAFLD is intrinsically linked to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, representing a significant manifestation of systemic metabolic dysfunction and hormonal imbalance. Addressing NAFLD is vital for long-term cardiovascular and metabolic health.
