Nocturnal Vasomotor Symptoms

Meaning

Nocturnal vasomotor symptoms, commonly referred to as night sweats, are transient episodes of peripheral vasodilation and profuse perspiration that occur during sleep, primarily due to fluctuations in core body temperature. These episodes are a hallmark symptom of the perimenopausal and postmenopausal transition, often driven by the instability of the thermoregulatory center in the hypothalamus secondary to declining estrogen levels. These symptoms severely disrupt sleep architecture and diminish overall quality of life.
