NMDA Receptors

Meaning

NMDA Receptors are ionotropic glutamate receptors critical for synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory within the central nervous system. These receptors require both glutamate binding and a depolarizing co-factor, typically magnesium ion efflux, to become fully activated and permit calcium influx. From an endocrine perspective, their function is highly sensitive to steroid hormone modulation, influencing mood and excitability. Maintaining their appropriate sensitivity is key to healthy neurocognitive vigor.
