Nitric Oxide Synthase

Meaning

A family of enzymes responsible for catalyzing the conversion of L-arginine to L-citrulline and the signaling molecule Nitric Oxide (NO). The three main isoforms—neuronal (nNOS), inducible (iNOS), and endothelial (eNOS)—perform distinct physiological roles, notably in vascular tone and neurotransmission. Endothelial NOS activity is particularly relevant to cardiovascular health.
