Night Work Physiology

Meaning

Night work physiology describes the collective set of biological and hormonal adaptations and disruptions that occur in the human body when the primary period of wakefulness and activity is shifted into the conventional hours of darkness. This condition forces the body to operate against its intrinsic circadian rhythm, leading to misalignment between the internal biological clock and the external light-dark cycle. The resulting chronic desynchronization can significantly impact metabolic health, sleep quality, and the rhythmic secretion of key hormones like cortisol and melatonin.
