Night Shift Physiology

Meaning

Night Shift Physiology refers to the chronic physiological state induced by working against the body’s intrinsic circadian rhythm, resulting in systemic misalignment between the central clock and peripheral metabolic clocks. This misalignment is characterized by a reversed or flattened diurnal cortisol curve, suppressed nocturnal melatonin secretion, and compromised insulin sensitivity. Clinically, this state leads to an increased prevalence of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, and HPA axis dysfunction. Managing Night Shift Physiology requires specific chronobiological interventions to mitigate the health consequences of perpetual circadian disruption.
