New Dietary Ingredient (NDI)

Meaning

A New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) is defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a dietary ingredient that was not marketed in the United States before October 15, 1994. For such an ingredient to be legally introduced into a dietary supplement, manufacturers must generally submit a notification to the FDA providing evidence of its safety under the intended conditions of use, unless it is already present in the conventional food supply. This regulatory classification ensures a degree of pre-market scrutiny for novel substances appearing in consumer supplements.
