Neurotrophins

Meaning

Neurotrophins are a family of secreted protein growth factors that fundamentally support the survival, specialized development, and optimal function of neurons in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. These essential signaling molecules actively regulate neurogenesis, promote vital synaptic plasticity, and act as potent anti-apoptotic agents for vulnerable neuronal cells. Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a well-known example that is critically important for memory consolidation and learning processes.
