Mechanism
Neurotrophins exert their effects by binding to two main classes of cell surface receptors: the high-affinity tropomyosin receptor kinase (Trk) receptors and the low-affinity p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR). Binding to the Trk receptors, such as TrkB for BDNF, activates potent intracellular signaling cascades, including the MAPK and PI3K pathways, which promote neuronal survival, synaptic remodeling, and gene expression changes.
