Neurotrophic Factor Mimicry

Meaning

The therapeutic strategy of using exogenous compounds or interventions to activate the same cellular signaling pathways as endogenous neurotrophic factors, such as Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) or Nerve Growth Factor (NGF). This approach is designed to promote neurogenesis, enhance synaptic plasticity, and protect existing neurons from degeneration without directly administering the complex, large-molecule factors themselves. The goal is to stimulate the brain’s innate repair and growth mechanisms.
