Neurotransmitter function describes the precise release, action, and subsequent clearance of chemical messengers across the synaptic cleft, which transmit, amplify, or modulate signals between neurons or between neurons and effector cells. These chemical signals are intrinsically linked to hormonal systems, as many hormones (like cortisol) modulate neurotransmitter receptor sensitivity, and some amino acids serve as precursors for both. Optimal function is necessary for mood regulation, cognitive processing, and the proper signaling required by the HPA axis.
