Neurosteroid Dysregulation

Meaning

Neurosteroid Dysregulation is a pathological state characterized by an imbalance or aberrant production and metabolism of neurosteroids, which are steroid hormones synthesized de novo within the central and peripheral nervous systems. These molecules act as powerful, rapid modulators of neurotransmission, significantly influencing complex functions such as mood stabilization, cognition, and the body’s response to stress. Clinically, dysregulation is often implicated in the pathophysiology of various neuropsychiatric conditions, including persistent anxiety, major depressive disorder, and certain forms of insomnia.
