The term combines ‘neurological,’ relating to the nervous system, with ‘potentiation,’ derived from the Latin potentia meaning ‘power’ or ‘ability to do something.’ This concept originated from neurophysiological studies demonstrating that a brief, intense stimulus can temporarily enhance a reflex or response. In exercise science, it is applied to the temporary performance boost after a heavy lift.
Mechanism
The primary mechanism involves the phosphorylation of myosin regulatory light chains within the muscle, which increases the muscle’s sensitivity to calcium, thereby improving the efficiency of the excitation-contraction coupling. Additionally, a preceding maximal effort stimulus can enhance the efferent neural drive to the motor neuron pool, resulting in greater recruitment and a higher firing frequency in the subsequent effort. This enhanced neural readiness translates directly into a higher peak force output.
