Neuroinflammation and Hypogonadism

Meaning

The interconnected pathological state where chronic inflammation within the central nervous system (neuroinflammation) contributes to or is exacerbated by a deficiency in gonadal hormones (hypogonadism). Neuroinflammation can directly disrupt the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, impairing GnRH secretion and subsequently lowering testosterone or estrogen levels. Conversely, sex hormones possess potent neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting a reciprocal, detrimental relationship in their absence.
