Neurohormonal Activation

Meaning

Neurohormonal Activation refers to the coordinated, systemic physiological response involving the rapid release of both neurotransmitters and regulatory hormones, typically triggered by a significant homeostatic threat such as chronic stress, heart failure, or severe volume depletion. This compensatory mechanism primarily involves the sympathetic nervous system and the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone System (RAAS), aiming to restore immediate circulatory and metabolic stability. While initially adaptive, prolonged or chronic activation of this system contributes significantly to the progression of various diseases, including hypertension and heart failure.
