Neurogenesis Mechanisms

Meaning

Neurogenesis mechanisms refer to the complex cellular and molecular pathways responsible for the proliferation, migration, and differentiation of new neurons from neural stem cells and progenitor cells. In the adult brain, this process primarily occurs in the subgranular zone of the hippocampus and the subventricular zone. Enhancing these mechanisms is a key therapeutic goal for improving cognitive function, particularly learning and memory, and for promoting structural resilience against neurodegeneration.
