Neurofilament Light Chain

Meaning

Neurofilament Light Chain (NfL) is a structural protein component of the neuronal cytoskeleton, specifically the intermediate filaments found in large myelinated axons, and serves as a highly specific and sensitive biomarker for axonal damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Elevated concentrations of NfL in cerebrospinal fluid or blood plasma are clinically interpreted as evidence of active neurodegeneration or acute neurological injury. Its measurement provides objective insight into the structural integrity of the nervous system, which is closely linked to overall hormonal and metabolic health.
