Meaning

Neuroendocrine suppression is a physiological state or an intentionally induced clinical effect characterized by the diminished synthesis and secretion of hormones due to inhibitory signals originating from the central nervous system or negative feedback loops within the endocrine axis. This suppression often involves the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) or hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axes, where high circulating levels of a target hormone or an exogenous analog signal the hypothalamus and pituitary to decrease their stimulating trophic hormone release. Clinically, this phenomenon is often observed during exogenous hormone administration or as a consequence of chronic, overwhelming physiological stress.
