Neuroendocrine Axis Suppression

Meaning

Neuroendocrine Axis Suppression is a clinical state where the normal, rhythmic, and feedback-regulated secretion of hormones along a central regulatory pathway is inhibited or significantly diminished. This suppression is most frequently observed following the prolonged administration of high-dose exogenous hormones, which overrides the body’s natural negative feedback loop. A classic example is the suppression of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, leading to a functional atrophy of the adrenal cortex and an inability to mount an appropriate stress response.
