Neurodegenerative Senescence

Meaning

Neurodegenerative Senescence describes the complex process where the aging of neuronal and glial cells within the central nervous system leads to a progressive decline in function, ultimately contributing to neurodegenerative diseases. This biological aging is characterized by the accumulation of cellular damage, telomere shortening, and the persistent secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, collectively known as the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype or SASP. Within the hormonal health context, the decline in neurosteroids and the dysregulation of the HPA axis are considered key factors accelerating this age-related neuronal vulnerability.
