Neurochemical Reward Systems

Meaning

A complex network of interconnected brain structures, primarily involving the mesolimbic pathway, that regulate motivation, pleasure, and reinforcement learning through the release and action of key neurotransmitters, most notably dopamine. These systems drive goal-directed behavior by assigning a value to stimuli and experiences. Chronic overstimulation or depletion can lead to dysregulation, impacting mood, focus, and impulse control.
