Neurochemical Dysregulation

Meaning

Neurochemical dysregulation describes an abnormal state of imbalance or impaired function among the various neurotransmitters and other signaling molecules within the central and peripheral nervous systems. This disruption compromises the precise transmission of signals between neurons, leading to functional impairments in mood, cognition, sleep architecture, and overall neurological resilience. In the hormonal context, this dysregulation is frequently a downstream consequence of fluctuating or deficient sex steroid and thyroid hormones, which are powerful modulators of brain chemistry.
