Neurobiological Arousal

Meaning

Neurobiological arousal is a fundamental physiological state defined by the activation of the central and autonomic nervous systems, resulting in an increased state of alertness, vigilance, and responsiveness to external or internal stimuli. This state is mediated by a complex interplay of neurotransmitters and neuromodulators, including norepinephrine, dopamine, and acetylcholine, that prepare the body for action, often associated with the ‘fight or flight’ response. In hormonal health, this state is intimately linked to the HPA axis, as chronic or dysregulated arousal can lead to sustained cortisol release and subsequent endocrine imbalance.
