Neuro-Modulator

Meaning

A Neuro-Modulator is a chemical messenger released by neurons that influences the excitability and communication of a diverse population of surrounding neurons over a slower, longer time scale than a classical neurotransmitter. Unlike neurotransmitters, which act rapidly at a single synapse, neuro-modulators diffuse through the extracellular fluid to affect multiple target cells, altering the overall functional state of neural circuits. Hormones, neuropeptides, and certain amines frequently function as neuro-modulators, profoundly influencing mood, sleep cycles, appetite, and cognitive processes.
