Neuro-Metabolic Axis

Meaning

This is a unifying concept describing the bidirectional and integrated signaling pathways that link the central nervous system (CNS) with peripheral metabolic organs, including the liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle. It represents the crucial communication system through which the brain monitors and regulates systemic energy balance, appetite, thermogenesis, and glucose homeostasis. Dysfunction in this axis is central to the pathophysiology of metabolic syndrome and certain neurodegenerative diseases.
