Neuro-Glial Network

Meaning

The Neuro-Glial Network refers to the complex, integrated system of communication and functional interdependence between neurons and glial cells (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, and microglia) within the central and peripheral nervous systems. This concept moves beyond the traditional, neuron-centric view of the brain to recognize glial cells as active participants in synaptic function, neurogenesis, and metabolic support. The network is critical for maintaining the brain’s microenvironment, regulating blood flow, and mediating inflammatory responses. Dysregulation of this network is implicated in numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders, as well as the hormonal control centers of the hypothalamus.
