Neuro-Executive Function

Meaning

Neuro-Executive Function refers to the set of high-level cognitive skills mediated primarily by the prefrontal cortex, which include working memory, inhibitory control, attentional focus, and cognitive flexibility. These functions are the “CEO” of the brain, enabling goal-directed behavior, complex planning, and the successful navigation of daily life challenges. The integrity of neuro-executive function is highly sensitive to fluctuations in the endocrine environment, particularly stress hormones and sex steroids.
