Neuro-Estrogens

Meaning

Neuro-estrogens are a specific subset of steroid hormones, primarily estradiol and estrone, that are synthesized de novo within the central and peripheral nervous systems, independent of the gonadal or adrenal glands. These locally produced estrogens function as neuromodulators and neurotrophic factors, acting directly on neuronal and glial cells to regulate synaptic plasticity, cognitive function, and mood. Their concentration and activity within the brain are critical for neurological health.
