Neural Scaffolding

Meaning

The structural and supportive matrix of the central nervous system, comprising the extracellular matrix, glial cells, and the physical architecture of neuronal connections, which provides the necessary stability and environment for optimal neural function and plasticity. Maintaining robust neural scaffolding is critical for synaptic integrity, efficient signal transmission, and protecting against mechanical and chemical stress. Age-related degradation of this structure is a key factor in cognitive decline.
