Neprilysin (NEP)

Meaning

Neprilysin, or NEP, is a zinc-dependent metalloprotease enzyme, also known as neutral endopeptidase (NEP), which is widely distributed throughout the body, including the central nervous system, kidneys, and lungs. Its crucial physiological function involves the cleavage and inactivation of a broad spectrum of endogenous vasoactive peptides, such as natriuretic peptides, bradykinin, and substance P. In the context of hormonal and cardiovascular health, NEP’s action is significant because it regulates the levels of peptides that control blood pressure, fluid balance, and cardiac remodeling.
