Nail Matrix

Meaning

The nail matrix represents the vital, specialized epithelial tissue situated at the proximal end of the nail bed, beneath the eponychium or cuticle, serving as the origin point for nail plate formation. This highly vascularized and innervated germinal tissue contains rapidly dividing keratinocytes, which are responsible for producing the structural components of the nail. Its continuous cellular proliferation and differentiation are fundamental for the ongoing growth and integrity of the fingernail or toenail.
