NAFLD

Meaning

NAFLD is the clinical acronym for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, a prevalent condition characterized by the accumulation of excess fat (steatosis) in the liver cells of individuals who consume little to no alcohol. This disease spectrum ranges from simple steatosis to Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH), which involves inflammation and potential fibrosis, posing a significant risk for cirrhosis and hepatic failure. NAFLD is strongly associated with metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, and obesity, severely compromising hepatic function.
