Myxedema

Meaning

Myxedema is a severe, clinical manifestation of prolonged and profound hypothyroidism, characterized by a distinct non-pitting edema and thickened, doughy skin, particularly around the eyes and lower legs. This condition results from the abnormal deposition of hydrophilic mucopolysaccharides, primarily hyaluronic acid, in the dermis and other tissues. While it is a specific term for the dermal changes, it is also often used clinically as a synonym for severe, untreated hypothyroidism, which can progress to the life-threatening myxedema coma. Recognition of this physical sign is crucial for timely diagnosis and initiation of thyroid hormone replacement therapy.
