Myosteatosis

Meaning

Myosteatosis is a pathological condition characterized by the abnormal accumulation of fat, specifically triglycerides, within the skeletal muscle tissue, also known as intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) infiltration. This condition is distinct from subcutaneous fat and is strongly associated with a decline in muscle quality, severe insulin resistance, and reduced physical function and strength. It often coexists with sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass, significantly contributing to the clinical presentation of frailty and metabolic syndrome in aging and sedentary populations.
