Myostatin Suppression

Meaning

The clinical and research strategy focused on the targeted inhibition of the activity or expression of the myostatin protein, a growth differentiation factor (GDF-8) that acts as a potent, natural negative regulator of skeletal muscle mass and differentiation. Myostatin suppression is employed to overcome the inherent physiological limits on muscle growth, leading to enhanced muscle hypertrophy and significant strength gains. This intervention is particularly relevant in the clinical management of severe muscle-wasting conditions, such as sarcopenia, cachexia, and muscular dystrophies.
