Myosin Heavy Chain

Meaning

Myosin Heavy Chain (MHC) is the principal, large protein subunit that forms the thick filaments of the sarcomere, which is the fundamental contractile unit of striated muscle, including skeletal and cardiac tissue. Different isoforms of this protein, such as alpha-MHC and beta-MHC, possess distinct ATPase activities, directly determining the speed and force-generating capacity of the muscle contraction. The specific MHC isoform expressed in a muscle fiber is highly regulated.
