Myokine Messengers

Meaning

A diverse group of signaling proteins, or cytokines, secreted by skeletal muscle fibers in response to muscle contraction, which act as endocrine, paracrine, or autocrine factors. These messengers mediate the cross-talk between muscle and other organs, including the liver, adipose tissue, and brain, profoundly influencing systemic metabolism and inflammation. Myokine release is a key mechanism by which exercise exerts its beneficial, multi-systemic effects on hormonal health and longevity.
