MYOD1

Meaning

MYOD1, or Myogenic Differentiation 1, is a master regulatory gene and its corresponding protein that is critically involved in the determination and differentiation of muscle cells. Often termed a ‘master switch,’ its expression is sufficient to convert non-muscle cells into a muscle lineage, highlighting its central role in myogenesis. Maintaining the optimal activity of this factor is paramount for muscle repair, combating sarcopenia, and preserving metabolic health in aging adults. It represents a key molecular target for anabolic interventions, including hormonal support and resistance training.
