Myocardium

Meaning

The myocardium is the specialized, muscular middle layer of the heart wall, primarily composed of unique cardiac muscle tissue. This powerful layer is solely responsible for generating the forceful, rhythmic contractions necessary to effectively pump blood throughout the entire circulatory system. The structural integrity and contractile function of the myocardium are critically influenced by systemic factors, including circulating hormones, metabolic status, and autonomic nervous system input.
