Myocardial Stretch

Meaning

Myocardial stretch refers to the mechanical lengthening of cardiac muscle fibers, specifically cardiomyocytes, during the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle when the ventricles fill with blood. This stretching, also known as preload, is a fundamental physiological stimulus that directly influences the force of subsequent ventricular contraction, a principle described by the Frank-Starling mechanism. It represents the degree of tension on the heart muscle just before it contracts, directly impacting the volume of blood ejected with each beat.
