Myocardial Remodeling

Meaning

Myocardial remodeling is a collective term for the molecular, cellular, and interstitial changes that occur in the myocardium in response to chronic stress, injury, or altered loading conditions, such as hypertension or myocardial infarction. This process involves changes in cardiomyocyte size, function, and survival, along with alterations in the extracellular matrix, leading to progressive changes in the heart’s size, shape, and function. While initially compensatory, maladaptive remodeling is a key precursor to heart failure.
