Myocardial Performance Index

Meaning

The Myocardial Performance Index (MPI), also known as the Tei index, is a non-invasive echocardiographic measure used in cardiology to assess global systolic and diastolic ventricular function, reflecting the overall efficiency of the heart muscle. It is calculated as the sum of the isovolumic contraction time and isovolumic relaxation time divided by the ejection time. A higher MPI value typically indicates greater cardiac dysfunction, signifying a less efficient heart. This index is a valuable clinical tool for monitoring cardiac status in patients with hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid disorders, that can impact heart muscle performance.
