Myocardial Ischemia

Meaning

Myocardial Ischemia is a pathological condition characterized by a critical imbalance between the oxygen supply and the metabolic demand of the heart muscle, or myocardium, typically due to reduced blood flow through the coronary arteries. This deficit of oxygen and nutrients impairs the heart’s ability to pump effectively and, if prolonged, can lead to irreversible tissue damage, known as a myocardial infarction or heart attack. Hormonal factors, particularly estrogen and testosterone levels, are known to influence vascular health and therefore impact the risk profile for this condition.
